Hungría fue a Alemania con la firme intención
de llevarse la corona olímpica por tercera vez consecutiva, pero el
centrocampista polaco Kazimierz Deyna le robó las ilusiones al anotar el 2 a 1 para Polonia en la final.
Estando 1-0 bajo en la pausa, Polonia aprovechó el violento vendaval a sus
espaldas para volcar el partido ante la presencia de 80,000 espectadores en el
estadio Olímpico de Múnich.
Deyna, quien había marcado los dos goles en la
final, contabilizando un total de 9 tantos en todo el torneo, fue una de las
piezas más cotizadas del elenco polaco, junto con Grzegroz Lato, quien
brillaría en la Copa
Mundial de 1982, y Robert Gadocha.
Hungría llegaba invicta a la final. Su última
derrota databa de la semifinal de 1960, en la que había perdido 2 a 0 contra Dinamarca.
Los polacos eran, indudablemente, la escuadra
más potente de este torneo, en el cual se introdujo una segunda ronda de grupos
antes de las eliminaciones en los cuartos de final y semifinales. Abrieron la
senda exitosa de la primera vuelta con tres victorias: 5 a 1 contra Colombia (tres
goles de Gadocha y dos de Deyna), 4
a 0 contra Ghana (dos goles de Gadocha y uno de Deyna) y
2 a 1
contra Alemania Federal (dos tantos de Jerzy Gorgon).
En la segunda fase, los polacos empataron con
Dinamarca 1 a
1, derrotaron a la
Unión Soviética por 2 a 1 y arrollaron 5 a 0 a Marruecos, clasificándose
para la final con cuatro tantos más de Deyna.
En la confrontación entre las dos Alemanias en
la segunda fase, Alemania Oriental derrotó a su rival por 3 a 2. Joachim Streich y
Eberhard Vogel concretaron la victoria en el segundo tiempo y se clasificaron
para el partido por el tercer puesto.
Por primera vez en la historia del Torneo
Olímpico, dos equipos compartieron las medallas de bronce, ya que Alemania
Oriental empató a dos con la Unión Soviética. No se había previsto ningún
sistema para definir el ganador.
