COPAS: SUDAMERICANA, MERCOSUR, SUPERCOPA, CONCACAF , etc

SUDAMERICANA . RECOPA.  MERCOSUR

Copa Sudamericana

After the abolishment of the Copa Merconorte and the Copa Mercosur, a Pan-American club cup was planned (Copa Pan-Americana 2002) but failed to be organised. Instead a tournament restricted to South American clubs was established. In 2005, clubs from Mexico and the United States were admitted.

Recopa

Played between the winners of the Copa Libertadores and the Supercopa. Since São Paulo won both in 1993, the winner of the Copa Conmebol was invited (Botafogo). The 1997 edition, which was to be played in 1998, was postponed and played as part of the Copa Mercosur 1999.
The competition was revived as a match between the Copa Libertadores holders and the winners of the Copa Sudamericana 2002.
A competition called "Recopa Sudamericana de Clubes" was also played in 1970, see the file on other Copas.

Supercopa Libertadores (Supercopa João Havelange)

Played for a decade between past winners of the Copa Libertadores. The last edition in 1997 also included Vasco da Gama, who were admitted as winners of the 1948 South American Champions Cup, played in Santiago de Chile.
In 1998, the tournament was to be replaced by a cup contested by former winners of the Supercopa, which was eventually scratched.
Eventually, the tournament was replaced by the Copa Mercosur.

Copa Conmebol

A club cup tournament introduced as a pendant to the UEFA Cup (except that teams qualified for the Libertadores could also participate in this tournament). The "bigger" countries, like Argentina and Brazil, have more entries. Currently not taken very seriously yet; matches are often played between virtual "reserve teams", especially in the earlier rounds. Will be discontinued in 2000, after the Copa Libertadores was extended to 32 teams.

Copa Interamericana

Cup contested between the winners of the Copa Libertadores of South America and the Copa CONCACAF of the North and Central American champions. There often was one-and-a-half year delay between the actual dates of the matches and the years of the Copa Libertadores and Copa CONCACAF winners to which they correspond.
The value of the Cup has further been diminished by the fact that a number of Copa Libertadores champions in the nineties couldn't be bothered and the runners-up played for them, such as Universidad Católica for 1993 Copa Libertadores winners São Paulo and Atlético Nacional for 1995 winners Grêmio. An unsuccessful revival attempt was made in 1998, with Mexican clubs are now eligible for both constituent cups.
In 2002 a new competition, the Copa Pan-Americana including teams from all parts of the American continent was supposed to start but eventually cancelled (and replaced by another South American attempt to get a kind of UEFA Cup, the Copa Sudamericana). In any case, the Copa Interamericana finally seems to have been abandoned completely.

CONCACAF Cup

  Palmares
  Finals

Main club tournament within the CONCACAF region. Format underwent many changes, so did enthusiasm from the clubs, and past selection criteria for participation are best described as byzantine. An attempt to change the format for 2002 to a 'Champions' League', for which the 2001 tournament was abandoned, was given up before the draw. It was revived again in 2008.
In 1961 a tournament for Central American and Caribbean teams was held which is not part of the official series; winners were LD Alajuelense.
