La Unión Soviética se consagró campeón tras un penoso triunfo final en estos Juegos de 1988, pero se mostró muy decidida a llevarse su segunda medalla de oro olímpica. En la primera ronda ganó dos encuentros y empató uno, este último a cero contra el dueño de casa. Derrotó a Brasil por 2 a 1 en la final, en el alargue.

UNIÓN SOVIÉTICA CAMPEÓN JJ.OO 1988

Romario, quien sería figura estelar en el Mundial de 1994 y quien se alzó con la corona de máximo cañonero en Seúl con siete tantos, abrió la cuenta a favor de Brasil en el minuto 29. Igor Dobrovolski igualó el marcador a mediados del segundo tiempo. Como el resultado no se alteró, tuvieron que ir al alargue y el sustituto Yuri Savichev consiguió marcar el gol de la victoria ya en el minuto 103 ante la presencia de 73,000 espectadores en el estadio olímpico.
Seis años más tarde, Romario, Bebeto y Claudio Taffarel fueron las figuras claves del campeón mundial Brasil.
BRASIL 1988 - VICECAMPEONES OLIMPICOS 

El torneo de 1988 no estuvo exento de sorpresas. Zambia vapuleó a Italia por 4 a 0 en la primera ronda con una tripleta de Kalusha Bwalya (varios jugadores de esta escuadra murieron en un accidente aéreo en camino a un partido clasificatoria de la Copa Mundial en 1993).
Zambia fue derrotada 4 a 1 por Alemania Federal en los cuartos de final, encuentro en que el ariete Jürgen Klinsmann -quien desempeñaría un papel crucial en el triunfo mundialista de Alemania cuatro años más tarde- convirtió tres goles. Italia perdió 3 a 0 contra Alemania en el partido por la medalla de bronce, con goles de Klinsmann, Gerhard Kleppinger y Christian Schreier.
Alemania no había logrado imponerse a Brasil en las semifinales, pese a que la igualdad de uno a uno persistiera tras 120 minutos de juego. Los sudamericanos ganaron 3 a 2 la definición por tiros desde el punto penal.
BRASIL MEDALLA DE PLATA EN 1988

En la otra semifinal, los soviéticos demostraron que eran especialistas en las victorias tardías de alargue, cuando derrotaron a Italia por 3 a 2 tras finalizar empatados a uno en el tiempo reglamentario. Arminas Narbekovas (minuto 92) y Alexi Mikhailchenko (minuto 102) fueron los constructores de la victoria. Andrea Carnevale, quien fuera suspendido más tarde en el AS Roma por consumo de drogas, acortó distancia dos minutos antes del término de la final.
La asistencia de espectadores no cumplió las expectativas creadas por los dos Olímpicos precedentes. 729,000 espectadores vieron los 32 partidos, lo cual significó que, pese a todo, el fútbol fue el deporte más popular en estos Juegos de verano.
