En plena etapa de redemocratización Nigeria recibió su primer Copa África tras sucesivos golpes militares e intentos frustrados. Olusegun Obasanjo fue el jefe militar que condujo a los nigerianos a las elecciones de1979, cuando el Torneo llegó al país Shehu Shagari ya había asumido, como en otras oportunidades el equipo Campeón dirigido por el portugues Otto Gloria fue usado por los gobernantes , igualmente no serviria de mucho, Shagari sufriria un nuevo golpe 3 años despues siendo aún acusado de corrupción y fraudes.
