Tal como lo muestra la estadística, el torneo disputado en Australia reunió a 16 seleccionados preocupados por llegar el arco rival. En 32 partidos, se convirtieron 102 goles, lo que arroja un promedio de más de 3 goles por encuentro.
Pero más allá de los números, la consigna para todos los equipos era la de destronar a Nigeria, último ganador de la medalla de oro en Atlanta 1996. Y como no podía ser de otra manera, la posta fue para otro equipo africano. Sí, bajo el mando de Jean-Paul Akono, Camerún se quedó por primera vez en su historia con el título de la categoría.

Para alcanzar el éxito, Akono mezcló a jóvenes promesas como Geremi Njitap, Lauren Etame Mayer y Samuel Etoo, con la experiencia de Patrick Mboma y Serge Mimpo. El talento individual de estas figuras, combinado con un espíritu incansable de equipo, desembocó en un éxito sin precedentes para el fútbol camerunés. En primera fase, los resultados no fueron los esperados para el actual campeón. Tras un triunfo ante Kuwait por la mínima diferencia (3-2), Camerún no pudo mantener la ventaja en el marcador e igualó 1-1 frente a la República Checa y Estados Unidos. Lo mejor estaba por venir...
CAMERÚN ALEGRÍA EN EL CAMPO, ALEGRÍA EN LAS TRIBUNAS

En cuartos de final, los africanos dieron uno de los batacazos del torneo al eliminar con gol de oro al Brasil de Wanderley Luxemburgo. Mboma abrió el marcador en el primer tiempo, pero un descuido defensivo (tal vez el punto débil de los hombres de Akono) permitió a Ronaldinho igualar en tiempo de descuento. La aparición de Modeste Mbami en tiempo extra desató la locura en la colorida tribuna africana, que catapultó a sus jugadores a la idolatría absoluta. La semifinal ante Chile, la gran sorpresa del torneo, comenzó complicada con el gol en contra de Patrice Abanda. Sin embargo, el partido sufriría un vuelco en el marcador gracias al nuevo tanto de Mboma y la impecable ejecución de un tiro penal por parte de Lauren Etame Mayer en los minutos finales.
Los 104,098 espectadores que se dieron cita en Sydney para ver la final entre Camerún y España disfrutaron de un partido sencillamente inolvidable. A los 2 minutos de juego, los europeos se pusieron en ventaja con un estupendo tiro libre de Xavi. Angulo pudo aumentar la diferencia dos minutos más tarde, pero su penal fue contenido por Idriss Carlos Kameni. El segundo gol español llegaría en el cierre de la primera mitad, gracias al gol de Gabri. ¿Partido liquidado? De ninguna manera. Los "Leones Indomables" sacaron a relucir sus garras y alcanzaron el empate con goles de Amaya, en contra de su propio arco, y Etoo. Ni siquiera las expulsiones de Gabri y José Mari en España pudieron desnivelar el resultado. Tras 120 minutos de batalla incesante, se necesitaron los tiros desde el punto del penal para definir al campeón. Todos los africanos convirtieron, mientras que Amaya estrelló el suyo en el travesaño. 
La gloria fue para Camerún.

La gran sorpresa fue Chile, que liderado por Iván Zamorano (máximo anotador de la competición con 6 conquistas) se ubicó el podio con la medalla de bronce.
